Bubble and Shadow
Panpan Gao, Bubble and Shadow (interactive installation), edible bubbles (made from starch, sugar, salt, and flavor oil), sound, lighting, and guided meditation. Courtesy of Panpan Gao (AI-assisted) and H Foundation for the Arts
Bubble and Shadow is an edible immersive installation by Bay Area–based artist Panpan Gao that guides visitors through sound, dim lighting, and taste edible bubbles. Inspired by a passage from the Diamond Sutra, the work foregrounds the fragile and sensory nature of perception, inviting visitors to become aware of their own inner state.
Participants directly engage with edible bubbles made from starch, sugar, salt, and flavor oil (no common allergens), followed by a moment of quiet reflection. At the end, each participant contributes a single word that becomes part of a collective digital “subconscious bubble”, extending personal reflection into a shared experience.
Open to all Intersect Palm Springs ticket holders. The edible experience is offered in small guided sessions on the hour and RSVP is required for preparation and safety.
Ringing THE REVERSE SIDE Bell
Paula Crown, THE REVERSE SIDE, 2025, bronze, 26.75 x 10.625 x 10.625 in, ed 1/4. Made in collaboration with Factum Arte, MadridCourtesy of Sunnylands, the Annenberg Estate in Rancho Mirage, California, and Paula Crown Atelier
Every hour on the hour, attendees are invited to ring the REVERSE SIDE, by Paula Crown. The bell is struck from the outside with a wooden clapper. The sound is mesmerizing, rising, falling, and resonating in a hypnotic way. THE REVERSE SIDE embodies themes that resonate with history, especially the destruction of bells during World War II. Hitler removed 190,000 bells from towns across occupied territory, stripping them of their clappers and rendering communities silent. The bells were then melted down for armaments.
As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, Crown offers THE REVERSE SIDE as a metaphor for each voice in a democracy and the importance of never being silent.
Open to all ticket holders. This experience is offered on the hour and requires in-person sign-up.

Constantino Nivola, Peter Voulkos, and Stan Bitters each redefined the relationship between art, environment, and material, forging new connections between functional architecture and expressionist art. Their bold techniques and monumental forms challenged conventional distinctions between craft, fine art and building design, making surfaces come alive with texture, rhythm, and narrative.

The Work Continues with Architect and Artist Leo Marmol
Leo Marmol, FAIA
Photo: Roger Davies
Leo Marmol celebrates craft as a way of living deliberately in a rapidly accelerating world. As technology increasingly mediates how we live and relate to one another, and instability becomes part of everyday life, he understands craft as play, a process rather than an end product. Tracing the evolution of Marmol Radziner’s design-build ethos alongside decades spent painting, Marmol contends that art, architecture, and design are not separate disciplines but expressions of a single creative impulse. Situated in the unique context of Palm Springs, this presentation explores the desert as a meeting ground between Modernist ideals and Outsider Art traditions. Marmol looks to the desert as a teacher of patience and restraint, informed by his firm’s extensive Modernist restoration work, new homes, and his own abstract paintings in dialogue with the landscape.
Invoking the Bauhaus belief in thinking through making and the myth of Sisyphus as articulated by Albert Camus, Marmol reflects on the human desire for clarity in a world that resists resolution. For Camus, the “absurd” is not despair, but the tension between our need for understanding and the absence of any grand plan or final explanation. Like Sisyphus pushing his boulder uphill, we continue the work knowing it will never be finished. No single artwork or building can resolve this condition, but that failure does not diminish their value. Instead, Marmol frames creative practice as an ongoing commitment: a willingness to begin again, and to find meaning not in arrival, but in return. The Work Continues asks what art can offer as artificial intelligence grows more powerful and complex, and suggests that the imperfect human act of making matters now more than ever.

If this is your first opportunity hearing and seeing the bird songs, I'm sure you will agree, how beautiful they are.

Booth Talk: Charles Christopher Hill
Charles Christopher Hill, Useless Object, 2023, 48 x 48 in, Yiwei Gallery
Renowned on a global scale, Charles Christopher Hill's artwork has graced the walls of prestigious museums not only in California but across the globe. His pieces find a place of honor in esteemed collections, including the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Albuquerque Museum in New Mexico, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In 2018, Hill made a deliberate shift in his artistic approach, opting for larger compositions and elevating the significance of the white stabilizing material, gesso. This transformation allowed him to burnish the gesso, creating a subtle gloss that intensified the color saturation within his images. As a serendipitous development, Hill began incorporating geometric shapes into conglomerations, eventually leading him to paint everyday objects encountered in his daily life.
This new phase, which began in 2019, witnessed the introduction of dark horizon lines or a dark halo around central images, evolving further in 2021 to feature objects resting on a black horizon. Hill's artistic endeavor extends beyond mere visual aesthetics; he seeks to craft a smooth surface where paint and chemicals interact through intricate brushstrokes, transforming ordinary objects into what he terms "ritual instruments" in the tantric tradition. The resulting harmonious pigments invite viewers into a slow, contemplative exploration, echoing the Taoist philosophy that the simplest holds profound depth. In his minimalist portrayals on canvas, Hill masterfully blends finesse and simplicity, inviting observers to engage with his art on a profound level.
Charles Christopher Hill is represented by Yiwei Gallery. This event is open to all ticket holders.

COD's Architecture Innovators: Leading the Future of Design & Sustainable Housing
COD’s ‘tiny home’
College of the Desert’s (COD) Architecture and Environmental Design program created a collaborative partnership in 2020 involving students focused on creating sustainable and functional living spaces that address the growing need for affordable housing. Originating as a class competition, faculty challenged students to design tiny houses on wheels that comply with national regulations for recreational vehicles. The winning design, funded by a $125,000 Strong Workforce Grant, serves as a model for sustainable housing and aims to educate both students and the public on the benefits of adopting such practices.
Constructed with a focus on efficiency and environmental impact, the first COD tiny home, measuring just 225 square feet, features amenities such as dual-glazed vinyl windows, a multi-split air conditioning/heating system, sustainable royal vinyl flooring, recycled wool insulation, low-VOC paints, a tankless water heater, a rainwater-harvesting system, and solar panels.
Inspired by mid-century modern architecture, the design showcases clean lines, simple forms, and a connection to nature. The interior boasts a space-efficient living area, kitchenette, bathroom, queen-sized sleeping loft, and washer/dryer combo. Following the success of the initial and second project, a third home with ADA compliance, is currently under construction with the design created by students Molly Glaab and Gleisy Romero.
“The tiny house build doesn’t just benefit the students; it also presents an opportunity for residents seeking affordable housing options,” adds Bitanga. “It’s a model that can be replicated in all communities. The project aims to educate students and the public about the benefits of sustainable housing and encourages them to adopt similar practices in their own lives.
"As we curate Intersect Palm Springs to showcase the finest art galleries in the country, it's equally important for us to invest in emerging talent, including our architectural and design students excelling in higher education. These students represent the future of innovation and creativity in the field,” shares Tim von Gal, CEO of Intersect Art and Design. “By bridging the worlds of art and education, we contribute to the growth of these students and foster a vibrant community that values both tradition and the evolution of artistic disciplines."
We invite you to come meet COD’s faculty and students involved with the project and see firsthand the transformative power of architecture, design, and sustainability.
This event is open to all ticket holders.
Booth Talk: Corinne Chaix
Corinne Chaix, Surrender, pastels, acrylic and ink on canvas, 58 x 72 x 2 in, Yiwei Gallery
French born artist Corinne Chaix crafts captivating narratives infused with a science fiction-inspired lens that mirrors the tumultuous reality of our contemporary world. Her work evokes a palpable sense of impending doom and chaos, reminiscent of the challenges we grapple with today, yet it also hints at a resilient hope amid the turmoil. Chaix weaves fantastical tales on canvas or paper, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in her intricately layered paintings that unfold like a gripping novel. The longer one engages with her art, the more clues emerge about the plot, leaving interpretation open to the viewer's perspective. Chaix skillfully blurs the boundary between imagination and reality, employing a predominantly green palette of pastels, oil, and ink to amplify the immersive experience. Despite the surreal dreamscapes depicting isolated figures in suffocating floods, her art transcends science fiction, resonating with the stark realities of our present global challenges, notably the pandemic. Through her work, Chaix holds onto hope, portraying the endurance of individuals amidst disaster. Influenced by Jules Verne's classic "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," Chaix uses fiction as a powerful tool for social commentary on human passivity and our peculiar behaviors in the face of danger and environmental concerns. With a diverse educational background in fine arts, computer science, and animation, coupled with exhibitions in Paris, New York, and California, Chaix continues to weave her compelling narratives that captivate audiences around the world.
Corinne Chaix is represented by Yiwei Gallery. This event is open to all ticket holders.

Booth Talk: Carrie Ann Plank, Javiera Estrada and Luminous Waveforms
Javiera Estrada, The Color Purple, 2023, archival pigment print, 40 x 65 in, Jonathan Carver Moore
Carrie Ann Plank is a San Francisco based artist working in installation, printmaking, and painting. Focusing on layers of sophisticated geometry, Plank examines the space of intersecting patterns to describe new structures. The work utilizes mathematical equations to create multiple overlapping impressions that reveal additional distinct pattern formations. The resulting forms are space in between, the intercession, of concrete data. Plank's works are in the permanent collections of the Fine Art Archives of the Library of Congress, Fine Art Museums of San Francisco, the Guanlan Print Art Museum in China and many more. She has also been honored with residencies at KALA in Berkeley, CA, and Taller Experimental de Gráfica de La Habana in Havana, Cuba. Most recently she was a 2024 SECA award nominee at SFMOMA.
Luminous Waveforms, Bench, 2023, Baltic birch plywood, Jonathan Carver Moore
Victoria Mara Heilweil and Phil Spitler are a collaborative team that create experiential works of art incorporating new technologies in the design, fabrication and aesthetics. Their Luminous Waveforms project began in 2016. Luminous Waveforms has been exhibited at the Napa Lighted Arts Festival, Oakland Immersive Arts Festival, California Academy of Sciences, Autumn Lights Festival in Oakland, Maker Faire, the Temple of Direction at Burning Man and Space 151 Gallery. When not working on new and exciting Luminous Waveforms projects, Heilweil is a nationally exhibited lens-based artist and Spitler is a Creative Technologist and partner at Bonfire Labs, a boutique content creation company in San Francisco.
Javiera Estrada, The Color Purple, 2023, archival pigment print, 40 x 65 in, Jonathan Carver Moore
Multi-media artist, Javiera Estrada was born in Acapulco and immigrated to the United States in 1989. Estrada's broad scope of work, which includes photography, mixed media, photograms, film, and textiles is influenced by her memories of growing up in Mexico—a tropical paradise of vibrant colors, steeped in spiritual ritual and magical realism. She examines the theme of interconnected consciousness in a multitude of ways. From incorporating female bodies as sculptural forms in organic communion with nature, to creating galactic primordial environments with inks—fluid and formless, structures representing the “prima materia,” original essence of existence. The juxtaposition of shadow and light play a recurring role in Estrada’s explorations as well, representing the internal struggle between the spiritual and the physical. Estrada has exhibited throughout the United States and has also shown in London, Germany, Switzerland, China and Singapore. In 2020, her solo show in Las Vegas received a Certificate of Special Congressional Commendation for the Arts from the United States Congress. Recently, she was commissioned to create a site-specific piece for the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

We are proud to present this engaging panel discussion with our 2024 Influential Artists of the Desert, Gerald Clarke and Ryan Campbell. They will share how they have been influenced directly and indirectly by the unique aspects of the Coachella Valley’s desert light, typography and culture.
For over 25 years, Gerald Clarke, an artist dedicated to addressing Native American identity’s complex intersections with mainstream U.S. culture and politics, has challenged stereotypes and embraced conceptual art. In 2020, the Palm Springs Art Museum showcased his groundbreaking retrospective, “Gerald Clarke: Falling Rock,” featuring 80 diverse works spanning various media. The exhibition provided a profound exploration of Clarke’s childhood experiences, particularly his rides back to the reservation with his father.
According to Clarke, the environment significantly shapes our worldview, emphasizing the impact of wide-open spaces and starry nights in fostering introspection and a connection to place. His life and studio work are guided by the inseparable link between Indigenous identity, history, and the land. Beyond his retrospective, Clarke’s extensive exhibition history includes major museum collections. Recognized with an Eiteljorg Museum Fellowship in 2007, he served as an Artist-in-Residence at the Institute of American Indian Arts in 2015. A dedicated educator, Clarke, currently a Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California Riverside, imparts knowledge on Native American art, history, and culture through his lectures.
Artist Ryan Campbell
Ryan Campbell is a distinguished painter and muralist whose artistic journey has been shaped by a diverse range of influences. Rooted in the graffiti culture of Southern California during the 1990s and early 2000s, his creative evolution reflects a deep exploration of geometric abstraction, minimalism, and hard-edge painting.
Campbell’s Line Segments series is an ongoing exploration, presenting layered bands of meticulously applied paint that converge into abstract and geometric formations. These intricate patterns offer nuanced experiences of depth, space, shadow, and vibrant color, captivating viewers with their dynamic visual interplay.
Campbell’s relocation to Palm Springs in 2001 marked a pivotal shift in his artistic trajectory, introducing him to the realms of minimalism, abstract expressionism, and California’s light and space movements. Inspired by revered artists such as Lewitt, Martin, Stella, Soto, and Phillip K Smith III, Campbell’s prolific career includes prestigious commissions ranging from Desert Regional Medical Center to the City of Palm Springs, as well as collaborations with notable entities like AEG Worldwide’s Goldenvoice, Pernod Ricard, Red Bull North America, and Covered California. His Line Segments works grace significant American collections, including the Macmillan collection, while finding homes in private collections worldwide. Campbell’s dedication to his craft earned him an Artist Residency and a popup studio at the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2020, further solidifying his commitment to investigating geometric abstraction and hard-edge painting within his practice.
Booth Talk: Steven Lustig
Steven Lustig, Composition in Cubes I, 2020, Carrara marble, black granite, 21 x 6 x 6 in, Marloe Gallery
Steven Lustig derives inspiration from his profound appreciation for the human form and its innate grace in motion. Having embarked on his artistic journey at the age of four, Lustig's life took a transformative turn at eighteen when he received a copy of Grey's Anatomy, sparking a lifelong dedication to drawing human anatomy for both business and fine art. Rooted in the ancient tradition of human anatomy, dating back to the Greeks who revered the human form as the pinnacle of artistic pursuit, Lustig's sculptures seamlessly blend classical influences with a modern twist. Drawing on the legacy of Kouros figures and the Italian Renaissance, his creations are also enriched by the avant-garde spirit of Italian Futurists Umberto Boccioni and Giacomo Balla. Each sculpture is a product of meticulous life drawing, capturing the essence of human motion and internal energy through live observation. With a unique fusion of ancient and contemporary elements, Lustig's works eloquently portray the fluidity and emotional depth of beautiful human beings. Over the past twelve years, he has honed his skills in sculpting stone and has produced over 10,000 figurative art drawings. Lustig's impressive body of work has been showcased in galleries across the western United States and featured in art fairs throughout the country.

Pratt and California College of the Arts Interior Design Students have engaged in spatial exploration through the intersection of soft and hard materiality to generate systems for the development of an interactive and flexible interior environment.
Inspired by the work and teachings of Anni and Josef Albers, students in the “Materiality & Space 3” course taught by Professor Margaux Schindler in Interior Design at the California College of the Arts transformed 2D pliable surface models into a series of 3D modular woven projections through a set of material experiments, form and performance operations for air, light, sound, and color. Soft and hard modular frame assemblies reconfigure and deconstruct to create interactive, flexible and adaptive interior environments.
